McAnulty Receives 2015 Cooperative Leadership Scholarship

Raleigh, NC – Barbara McAnulty of Hickory, NC has been selected to receive the 2015 Jim Graham Cooperative Leadership Scholarship, presented annually to a high school senior by the Cooperative Council of North Carolina.

 

The winner of the $1,000 college scholarship is selected from participants in the Cooperative Council’s Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp, held each June at the NC FFA Center at White Lake. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, leadership and community involvement. McAnulty attended Co-op Camp in June 2013 as well as the National Institute on Cooperative Education (NICE) at Virginia Tech University.

 

McAnulty will graduate this June from Hickory High School in Hickory, North Carolina.  She is currently deciding between several major universities, including NC State University, Purdue University, Notre Dame and Duke University.  She plans to major in biomedical engineering.  Some of McAnulty's extracurricular activities and impressive leadership roles include President of Catawba County 4-H Council, Interact Club President, Co-Captain of Women's Varsity Tennis Team, Tutorial Director of Hickory High's Mu Alpha Theta and Student Council Representative.  She is also a member of the Scholastic Cup Team, National Honors Society, Beta Club and Latin Club at Hickory High School.

 

 McAnulty is also actively involved in her community, and has served 185 hours of service while in high school.  She has volunteered for Adopt-a-Highway, Catawba Science Center, local nursing homes, Catawba County Meals on Wheels, Children's Advocacy Center, and various projects through 4-H.  She has also served as a mentor and tutor for different grade levels.  Through all of her community and school involvement, McAnulty has managed to maintain excellent academics, and will be graduating at the top of her class as valedictorian.

 

McAnulty has received several honors for her leadership abilities including the 2013 Co-op Leadership Award presented by the Cooperative Council of NC after serving as the Co-op President at Co-op Leadership Camp.  She has also received the 4H NC State Youth Volunteer Award, the 4H West Central District Youth Volunteer Award, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, was nominated twice for the United Way's Giving of the Heart Award.  When she has spare time, McAnulty's hobbies include playing piano, Irish dancing, running and playing tennis.

 

In announcing McAnulty's selection to receive the scholarship, Council President Jennie Gentry cited the leadership potential she possesses and the accomplishments she has made.  Gentry stated, “Barbara is a great example of the outstanding students who participate in the Council’s youth activities each year.  I know that her strong leadership skills, her compassion for helping others, and her successes will continue through her college years.  Her positive outlook and enthusiasm for life are infectious and I know she will continue to inspire others.  I am pleased the Council can have a small part in enabling Barbara to continue her education.”

 

 Barbara McAnulty is the daughter Peter and Jean McAnulty.  She was sponsored to attend the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp by Carolina Farm Credit, headquartered in Statesville, NC.
