The Council holds its Annual Meeting earlier in the year, for the purpose of bringing our members together to network, learn and conduct the business of the Council. Our members also participate in this 2-day event to engage in educational and program ideas.

2018 Annual Meeting was held in New Bern, NC. Even with some unfortunate cold and rainy weather we still managed to have a great time networking, connecting and learning about all of our different industries across the state.

Sewa Beats welcomed up with the opening workshop to learn how we collaborate and connect and doing so with drums made the exercise engaging, entertaining and put a smile on everyone’s face! We then got to hear from three distinct leaders in our state, Cutis Wynn of Roanoke Electric, Chuck Purvis of Coastal Credit Union and Greg Coltrain of Tri-County Electric. The panel discussed the changing economics of the state in our cooperative movement and how cooperatives are being innovative and challenging the norms for providing services to their members.

Day one concluded with a Coastal Credit Union sponsored Dinner and a storytelling session by Jamie Saunders of Coastal. After hearing how Coastal is so innovative and engaging with their members many of the attendees were able to see how the credit union fits into the cooperative movement so nicely.

Day two started off with the Annual Business Meeting, including the passing of the gavel from chair of the board Dan Schline of the Carolinas Credit Union League to Amanda Perry of River Street Networks. Amanda will lead the board through the 2020 Annual Meeting as Chairman. Dan will remain on the board as Past President.

The day two workshop was presented by Patrick McHugh of the NC Justice Center. The topic: Worker Owner Cooperatives and the conversion from small businesses or for profit corporations. One of the fastest growing sectors of the cooperative movement right now is the worker owner sector. We heard about the challenges, opportunities and potential that the state of North Carolina has in this work.

Concluding the two days was the sendoff lunch hosted by NC EMC. Nelle Hotchkiss of NCEMC gave a few closing words thanking the attendees for their time, talents and work to build the cooperative movement. She mentioned the growth of the Council and how everyone can play their part in building the cooperative movement in the state. The group concluded the two days with a fantastic lunch and luckily the sun came out for the travels home!
