Carlyle Teague was raised on a dairy farm in Snow Camp, North Carolina. He graduated from Sylvan High School, and graduated college from NC State University. Carlyle has spent his entire career in the agriculture industry. He served as manager of member and employee relations for Central Carolina Farmers Cooperative in Durham. He also worked as the Director of Public Affairs for the NC Department of Agriculture under Commissioner Jim Graham. This big job included serving as editor of The Agricultural Review, director of publicity for the State Fair, and aiding the Commissioner with speech writing, photography and travel. Then, in 1981, Carlyle became President of the Cooperative Council of NC, a position he served in for 27 years before retiring in 2008.
Carlyle has worked with numerous organizations and has served on many boards. He is the current President of the NC Agricultural Promotion Board in NCDA and is serving as Executive Director of the NC Specialty Foods Association. He has led organizations such as Association Executives of NC, Wake Soil and Water Conservation District, North Carolina Horse Council and Snow Camp Historical Drama Society. Carlyle’s hard work in his career has also earned him several distinguished awards including the Watt Huntley Award for Raleigh Public Relations Society and the NC State Grange Lifetime Achievement Award.
In his spare time, Carlyle is a professional photographer, and is involved in the Optimist Club and Highland United Methodist Church. His wife Martha, is a retired first grade teacher. They have one son, a daughter in law and two grandsons.
Carlyle has been extremely dedicated to the agricultural and co-op industries in North Carolina. In his 27 years of service to the Council, he made a major impact on the promotion of co-ops, on legislators, and on all of our members. He is a very hard worker, has great passion for preserving agriculture, and has obviously been very successful in his career. One of the most well-respected and well-known people that we know, and someone who we all look up to, it is also the Council’s pleasure to honor Carlyle Teague, second person inducted into the NC Cooperative Hall of Fame.
